The
Veranda…a state of mind
Hanging out at the
Veranda started about 6 years ago by a few of us on the “A” shift
that were tired of TV, and just wanted to relax with a cup of Joe
after dinner and watch the world go by. (Or maybe tell war stories)
What simply started out as a place to hang out, became much more
than that. It became not only a place to build a relationship with
your crew, but it became home to some of the best informal training
ever.
When can you not sit around with a
group of firefighters and get a simple answer to a simple call?
Never. Before you know it, the crews are regaling you with stories
from one call or another. Some of the probies have gotten more out
of the Veranda talks than any training packet could ever provide
them. They have the ability to learn something in minutes that took
some of us years to actually experience. But Veranda time is so much
more.
The biggest benefit is the relaxation.
I’m sure by now you have seen the beautiful sunset (from the nouns
section) that we can enjoy looking from the front ramp right over
the top of Jimboy’s Tacos. (A source of entertainment on its own).
One of the finer dining establishments here in down town suburbia.
Sit out on the Veranda with us and
watch the world go by. Watch people drive by, as they are trying to
Slim Jim themselves out of their car, while they are driving. True
story. Watch numerous auto burnouts. See the occasional hit and run.
See motorized bike guy. Watch the locals drive by and honk and wave.
The Diplomat with the 22’s is a favorite. Be party to a cast of
characters that are friendly, and always take to time to stop by and
tell you of their appreciation. Things experienced from the Veranda
are too numerous to describe. One must experience it in person. It
simply cannot be passed on in story or song.
All in all it is like being in an
interactive mall with all the trimmings. So if you are ever in the
area, come by and have a cup of Joe, enhance your learning curve,
see a beautiful sunset, and watch that special portion of the world
go by we call “Our first in.” |
